Why a Witch?

The reason I want to write a novel about a witch is that I find them scary. I, of course, am talking about the archetypal, hag-like witch from folk tales and not the wiccan/new age types I meet often (I live in San Francisco). As I wrote in a previous post, my impetus is dreams of crows. I know that there are some connection between the crow and the witches of yore. I am certain in doing this research that my newly acquired knowledge will alter what I plan on writing about. My ideas are still very vague: just random images and a mood I want to achieve in the story. More than anything, I want a protagonist in my novel who cackles when she/he laughs.
