One of my favorite things about the Wicked Witch of the West is that she commanded winged monkeys to do her bidding. For some reason, this endeared her to me, but I have no idea why. I guess the reason is winged monkeys are such a cool thing thing to have that you must immediately respect whoever has them. Winged monkeys are ultimate status symbol!
Besides that, I must admit I did not think the Wicked Witch of the West in the books was as cool as the one in the 1939 movie. I don’t know if it was because of Margaret Hamilton’s portrayal or due to the fact that the witch in the book is enslaving Winkies to fight her battles. She is also only able to command the winged monkeys because of a magic hat, which she can only use three times. She even uses an umbrella to fly instead of a broomstick. She is not the stuff of nightmares.
Margaret Hamilton’s Wicked Witch of the West, however, still gives me the trembles.
