“Spieglein, Spieglein, an der Wand / Wer ist die Schönste im ganzen Land?” or “Mirror, mirror on the wall/Who is fairest of them all?” This famous quote is said by the Queen to her magic mirror in the many versions of the old folktale Snow White. Although all of the stories portray her as being vain and evil, only some describe her as a witch (In fact, the mirror is not always a mirror, it is sometimes a moon or a lake). Some of the “witch” behavior the Queen demonstrates is: she eats (what she believes is) a young girl’s heart, poisons a comb and puts a deadly potion in an apple. After repeatedly failing to murder the young princess, the Queen is eventually captured and as punishment is forced to dance in scalding-hot iron shoes until she dies. That sounds more like the punishment for a witch than a queen to me.
