Baba Yaga is a Slavic witch who appears as a deformed, raggedy, aggressive-looking grandma. She flies around in a mortar and wields a pestle. It is often told that she lives in a hut made of chicken legs. Although she is frightening in appearance, she is often kind those who seek her assistance, but not always. The unpredictability of Baba Yaga has made her a compelling figure for folklore study. Because of her multi-faceted personality, researchers see as a symbol for many conflicting archetypes. The reason for this is believed to be due to the various Eastern tribes taking her as their own legend, causing her legend to be altered as a result of the different ethnic cultures.
